The Andy Mulcahy Signature Collection

Some months ago I noticed that one of the correspondents on the email list server for the Canadian Humanists Association closed his letters with an interesting series of sayings.  Andy is the web master for the Victoria Humanists Association   Since Andy was not including them on his page and believing that the collection was too valuable to leave unpublished  I offered to collect and publish  them here on the humanists.net.                                          Alan Levin, host of  the Humanists.net

" It was Nietzche who told us God was dead, but he
would be laughing in his grave if he knew
how many are still heaving over the corpse,
frantically trying to revive it."

"A scientist seeks information so that he can ask
better questions of the universe.
The fool, in turn, seeks information that
best corroborates his preconceived answer.".

" We humans are the direct descendants of the
 creationists, like it or not."

"Let us help and support one another, for we are
on our own in this vast, uncaring universe.".

"Life is but a momentary glimpse at the wonder of
this astonishing Universe and it is sad to see
so many dreaming it away on spiritual fantasies."

"The scientist seeks more information so that he can ask better
questions of the universe.
The fool seeks more information so that he can best corroborate
his preconceived answer."

" Religion teaches us to be irrational. It encourages us to
accept unsubstantiated claims, thus preparing fertile soil
for the demagogues amongst us."

Death's Cradle

First the moment,
then the total serenity
of nonentity, beyond identity,
when breath and body
flow swiftly from the scene,
atoms released, ego shattered clean,
unknowing, uncaring,
when our eyes grow still.

First the moment,
then the perfect peace of
nothingness,
the pure essence of nihility
envelops all that ever was
or ever will
when our eyes grow still..

" Only the materialist dare gaze upon the
bursting energy that is this amazing universe - -
all others shade their eyes (with words) from
its brilliance." agm

"Pity the poor philosopher who fervently, desperately
seeks the *Truth*
in order to avert his gaze from the reality before his eyes."

"Our natural aversion to killing one another can
be anesthetized with inspirational rhetoric."

"Though science has long since pulled the plug on
religion's life support system, the patient still
has convulsions and will not die easily."

"Ultimate Truths, final answers, are the fool's
pabulum - - easily swallowed, fast-food
for the mind."

" Nietzsche told us God was dead, but he would roll
over in his grave laughing if he knew how many
are still heaving over the corpse, frantically
trying to revive it."

"Only the materialist dare gaze at the amazing
explosion that is this universe, all others
shade their eyes (with words) from its brilliance."

" No one can disprove the existence of anything we
dream up -- since, after all, we did dream it up!"

To Believe or to Think
that is the question
whether 'tis nobler in the mind to hide in the womb
of sweet certainty
or face the outrageous slings and arrows of a
capricious universe...

"Ultimate Truths, final answers, are the fool's pablum
 - - easily swallowed, fast food for the mind."

" This is not a dress rehearsal. This is the only
world you will ever know and this is the only
life you will ever have. Seize the day".

"The end to evil will come when we have attained
that level of intellectual morality wherein we
will claim no thing to be true unless we can
substantiate such in a measurable,ostensive
manner."
